Fishing in the Andaman Islands – fishing season, boats and conditions

Fishing in the Andaman Islands offers stable tropical conditions and a sea where something is almost always happening. During the peak season, from October to mid-December and from January to May, the weather is most predictable and the fish move more regularly around the reefs. These are the months when you have the best chance of encountering species such as Giant Trevally, dogtooth tuna, yellowfin tuna, and coral trout.

Fishing is conducted using several different techniques depending on the situation. Poppers are used to entice fish from the surface, especially GT. Stickbaits work well over shallow areas and reef edges where fish hunt. Surface fishing is a unique experience that can only be found on these tropical fishing trips. Speed jigging is used when fishing deeper, where dogtooth tuna and various types of grouper lurk. It also happens that pelagic species strike poppers even though they normally stay deeper. This makes the fishing varied and provides good opportunities to adapt to the conditions.

Fishing groups are small so that everyone on board has plenty of space. Normally, four people fish per boat. The boat is built for tropical sport fishing with large open areas to make it easy for you to fish.

The guides know the area very well and plan the days according to weather, currents, and tides. This way, you get the best possible conditions, whether the goal is aggressive surface strikes, technical jig fishing, or a chance at a truly large dogtooth tuna.

Boat

The boat we use is a 38-foot long single-hull sport fishing boat made of custom-built FRP material, designed for fishing in tropical waters. Great care has been taken during construction to comply with the latest safety regulations. This makes it one of the few boats filled with solid foam insulation, guaranteeing that it will always remain afloat.

The 38-foot hull is perfectly adapted to the conditions of the Andaman Sea. The large open deck area and low gunwales make the boat ideal for popper and jig fishing. The non-slip deck provides secure footing when casting and fighting fish, which is of utmost importance. The boat is also ergonomically designed to avoid bumping into railings, seats, or other obstacles during fishing.

The boat is powered by new twin 250 hp fuel-injected four-stroke Yamaha engines, providing a safe, quiet, and reliable journey.

The GPS is connected to VHF for communication with shore, so we can always stay in contact when needed.

Island Hopping

We are based in Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman Islands in India. From here, our exclusive fishing trips depart, taking you to some of the hottest spots in the region. We fish at locations such as Campbell Shoal, Invisible Bank, and Dalrymple Bank, as well as on remote, lesser-known reefs where the fish are often larger and more aggressive. The area we cover stretches from Ritchie’s Archipelago in the north to Little Andamans in the south.

Our tropical fishing trips are meticulously planned and tailored for small groups of 1 to 4 anglers, ensuring a personalized and effective fishing experience. You can choose from anything from day trips around Port Blair to longer expeditions of 5–7 days where we explore distant fishing grounds in search of tropical trophies.

We custom-design each fishing trip according to your preferences, whether you want to focus on popper fishing for GT, use stickbaits, try light jigging for snapper and coral trout, or hunt for marlin in the deep. High-class guides ensure you can focus on fishing, while we take care of everything else surrounding your fishing trip.

Food & Accommodation

The accommodation during your stay is simple but tastefully renovated and of a good standard. Here you stay in bright and functional single rooms, all equipped with AC so that you can always rest cool and comfortably after a day at sea. The house has several fresh bathrooms of modern standard that are shared among guests.

The food is prepared by local chefs who use fresh ingredients from the area. You will enjoy homemade Indian dishes that are both well-spiced and prepared with care, and often the dishes can be adapted to your wishes.

If you catch a tuna or a snapper during your fishing trip, you have the option to bring the fish back to the kitchen, which will gladly prepare it for you in several different ways. Local beer can be purchased at the restaurant with your meals.

Fish species and bait selection in the Andaman Islands

Fishing in the Andaman Islands means strong species such as Giant Trevally, dogtooth tuna, and coral trout, requiring equipment that can withstand hard bites and tough fights.

Popping
Rods
PE8–PE10, 7’6”–8’6”. To be able to cast 120–200 grams and handle at least 10kg of drag.

Large, loud poppers around 100-200g.

When fish are not taking poppers, stickbaits in natural colors, pink, red, or dark colors work well.

Accessories
Sturdy hooks in sizes 5/0–10/0, treble or single hooks. From brands like Decoy, BKK, Owner, Gamakatsu. Also split rings and swivels around 200lbs.

Jigging
Short rods between 5–6.5 feet, often 1–2 pieces. PE4–PE6 is recommended for fishing with 150–400 gram lures. Depths usually vary between 50–150 meters.

Assist hooks in sizes 8/0–12/0 rigged with Kevlar line.

Colors such as natural, blue/silver, blue/green, and pink work well.

Braided line (braid) PE4–PE6, preferably color-marked so you can see the fishing depth.

Extra hooks, split rings, tools, and a simple tackle bag. Non-slip shoes are recommended.

Before a fishing trip to the Andaman Islands

What fish species are found in the Andaman Islands

The Andaman Islands are home to a large number of sport fishing species. The most common and sought-after are Giant Trevally (GT), dogtooth tuna, yellowfin tuna, bluefin trevally, red snapper, coral trout and several different grouper species. There are also opportunities to catch tuna, barracuda, mahi-mahi and other predatory fish depending on the season and area.

When is the best time to go on a fishing trip to the Andaman Islands?

The best time to travel is during peak season: October to mid-December and January to May. During these periods, the weather is more stable, the wind calmer, and the fish move more predictably around the reefs. This is when the chances are best for species such as GT, dogtooth tuna, and coral trout.

Can I customize my fishing trip?

Yes. You can customize your fishing trip entirely to your preferences. This applies to the number of fishing days, which fishing techniques you want to prioritize, whether you want to travel alone or in a group, and which add-ons you want to include. There is also the option to choose different accommodation, such as a resort, and to add activities and excursions in addition to fishing. You can also adjust the itinerary and change your flight locations if you wish. We will help you put together a plan that suits your level, your goals, and your budget.

Passport and visa information

To travel to the Andaman Islands, you need a valid passport and an e-visa for India. Your passport must be valid for at least six months after your return date. You apply for the e-visa online, and the process is straightforward. As your trip approaches, we will provide you with clear instructions on how to apply and what information you need to have ready.

Facts about the Andaman Islands

The Andaman Islands are an archipelago belonging to India, located in the Bay of Bengal. The area consists of over 500 islands, of which only a few are inhabited. The capital is Port Blair, which serves as a starting point for all onward journeys within the archipelago. The climate is tropical with warm temperatures year-round, and the area is known for its reef systems, deep channels, and rich marine ecosystems. Thanks to limited industrial fishing, the waters around the Andamans have an unusually strong population of predatory fish, making the archipelago a popular destination for sport fishermen from all over the world.

Is there Wi-Fi available?

Yes, there is Wi-Fi at the accommodation, but the speed and stability may vary. As the Andaman Islands are remotely located, the connection is usually slow and works best for basic use such as messaging and email. Do not expect to be able to upload large files or stream during your stay.

How do you fish in the Andaman Islands?

Fishing in the Andaman Islands is primarily done using popper fishing, stickbaits, light casting, and jigging. The technique used depends on the species, depth, and how the fish are moving on the day. Poppers are used to entice GT to the surface, stickbaits work well over shallower plateaus and along reef edges, and jigs are used on deeper structures where dogtooth tuna and grouper hunt. The guide plans the setup based on weather, currents, and tides to provide the best conditions. It is active and varied fishing that is adapted to the group and the day's conditions.

What is the weather and climate like in the Andaman Islands?

The Andaman Islands have a warm tropical climate year-round, with temperatures usually ranging between 28 and 32 degrees Celsius. During the peak fishing season, October–December and January–May, the weather is more stable with less wind and calmer seas. The monsoon season primarily occurs from June to September and brings more rain and stronger winds, which limits fishing during that time.
